To give participants a hands-on opportunity to create their own self-sustaining ecosystem in a jar, Mahidol University International College’s (MUIC) Science Society Club held an event entitled "Build a Mini Terrarium" on February 27, 2025 at the Main Lobby of Aditayathorn Building.

Through layering materials such as pebbles, activated charcoal, soil, moss, and tiny plants, the 56 participating students learned how different components work together to support life within a closed environment. This engaging activity introduced key scientific concepts, including the water cycle, photosynthesis, and nutrient recycling, allowing participants to witness these processes in action.

As they carefully assembled their miniature forests, participants gained a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and the delicate balance between living and nonliving elements in an ecosystem. The activity also encouraged responsibility, as the participants took home their terrarium which they can then care for and observe over time. By watching how water condenses, circulates, and sustains plant life within the jar, they will develop a better understanding of nature’s self-sustaining mechanisms.

Beyond its educational value, building a mini terrarium is a creative and relaxing experience. It fosters curiosity, patience, and an appreciation for the environment. Whether used as a decorative piece, a learning tool, or a personal green space, each terrarium serves as a small yet meaningful reminder of nature’s resilience and beauty.
