MUIC Co-hosts Successful ICTB 2024 Highlighting Innovations in Wellness and Sustainable Tourism

The 5th  International Conference on Tourism and Business (ICTB 2024), co-hosted by the Tourism and Hospitality Management (THM) Division of Mahidol University International College (MUIC), Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Switzerland), and Edinburgh Napier University (Scotland), successfully concluded on August 23, 2024 at the Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok.

This landmark event, with the Asian Ecotourism Network (AEN) as a special partner, brought together over 70 participants from 18 countries, underlining its role as a pivotal platform for advancing research and collaboration in tourism and business.

Held from August 21 to 23, 2024, ICTB 2024 featured a diverse array of presentations and discussions, focusing on key themes such as wellness tourism, sustainability, and innovation in tourism management. The conference fostered a spirit of collaboration and shared knowledge among scholars, industry professionals, and policymakers. A total of 42 academic papers were presented across 10 sessions, showcasing cutting-edge research and developments in the field.

Highlights of ICTB 2024:

The conference included insightful keynote addresses and special sessions from esteemed speakers who underscored the importance of innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in the tourism industry. Prof. Chulathida Chomchai, M.D., discussed “Accessible Thailand Wellness Tourism (ATWT): A Showcase of Collaboration in Medicine and Tourism,” focusing on how Thailand's inclusive wellness tourism initiatives are driven by stakeholder collaboration. Dr. Tanupol Virunhagarun, M.D., highlighted “Wellness Tourism: High-Value Tourism Products for Better Tourism Experience,” emphasizing the potential of wellness tourism to provide high-value, enriching experiences through innovative products. Dr. Martin Robertson's presentation on “Sustainable Events and Net Zero” addressed the critical need for the tourism sector to adopt sustainable practices and achieve net-zero emissions. Additionally, Dr. Alessandro Inversini delivered a compelling talk on “Building Resilience and Sustainability in Tourism through Data and New Technology,” exploring how technology can enhance sustainability and resilience in the tourism sector.

As a special partner, the Asian Ecotourism Network (AEN) played a significant role in the conference by hosting a special session. Mr. Nipatpong Chuanchuen, representing AEN, delivered an impactful presentation on “Carbon Neutral Tourism Development in Thailand,” sharing strategies for reducing carbon footprints and promoting sustainable tourism practices. ICTB 2024 provided numerous networking opportunities, enabling participants to connect during coffee breaks, social events, and focused sessions, fostering the exchange of ideas and the formation of new partnerships among academia, industry, and representatives.

Looking Forward to 2026:

The success of ICTB 2024 has set a positive trajectory for future conferences. The next ICTB conference is scheduled to be held in Scotland in 2026, hosted by Edinburgh Napier University. The conference will continue to build on its legacy of fostering academic and industry collaborations, exploring cutting-edge research, and addressing emerging trends in tourism and business.

The Mahidol University International College (MUIC) executive team led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yingyot Chiaravutthi, Associate Dean; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chanchai Phonthanukitithaworn, Associate Dean for Corporate Communication and Information Technology; and AjarnWimonsiri Hemtanon, Associate Dean for Student Affairs; accompanied by Prof. Dr. Nopraenue Sajjarax Dhirathiti, Vice President for Global Partnerships and University Council of Mahidol University, and a faculty member of the Social Science Division of MUIC, along with staff members, laid a royal Pan-Pum (a traditional floral arrangement) in front of the statue of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla as part of paying obeisance to him and also in observance of the 57th Anniversary of the Royal Bestowal of the University Name and the commemoration of Mahidol University’s 138th Anniversary, on March 2, 2026 at the Office of the President.
