It’s another time of transition in Mahidol University International College (MUIC)—when the current academic year ends and, after the summer respite, the new academic year begins. Senior students get ready to conclude their studies and prepare for graduation as a new batch of freshmen enter the MUIC as a new cycle of life starts. We’ve asked two senior students about their advice that they can share to freshmen—tips that are borne out of their years of studies in MUIC which hopefully can prove to be a major boost to the new students as they feel their way in their new environment. Mr. Jiratt “Boom” Pluemthanom 4th Year, International Relations and Global Affairs (IRGA)
  • Plan your weekly balance. Balance is key. Create a weekly routine that includes time for classes, studying, extracurriculars, exercise, and friends. It helps prevent burnout and keeps you productive throughout the trimester.
  • Join with a purpose. Don’t just join clubs for the sake of it—find ones that align with your interests or goals. Active involvement in the right activities will give you real growth, valuable networks, and meaningful experiences.
  • Go solo, it’s okay. Don’t hesitate to attend events, join clubs, or explore new things even if no friends tag along. Some of the best opportunities and friendships come from stepping out of your comfort zone.
  • Prioritize your peace. It’s natural for some friendships to change or drift apart over time. Focus on your mental well-being, and surround yourself with people and environments that support your growth.
  • Don’t fear course load. If you're interested in a class, don’t skip it just because it seems tough or outside your major. Many electives turn out to be surprisingly rewarding — academically and personally.
Ms. Pradchaya “Bell” Utsahakijamnuay 4th Year, Intercultural Studies and Languages (ICIC)
  • Explore the campus.
Freshman year is the best time to have a look around and get acquainted with the campus! Bring a new friend or go by yourself to find your special spot.
  • Try new things.
Opportunities don’t come by very often, so if you have a chance, why not take them and see where it goes: Join a student club or two, attend seminars, and volunteer to help with different events!
  • Don’t be afraid to be wrong.
You’ll make plenty of mistakes. The important thing is not to let them prevent you from being a better version of yourself. You’ll learn more from failing than from always being right.
  • Learn from everyone.
There is wisdom everywhere—not just in classrooms. Develop your person, not just your knowledge. Learn from your seniors, your peers, your juniors, even strangers!
  • Manage your time wisely.
You can’t do everything. Don’t neglect your studies, but don’t forget to rest and have fun. That way, you can get the most out of your time at college. Such sensible and valuable pieces of advice from two senior students! It’s exciting to learn important lessons on your own but if you can save time (and headache!) by following the hard-won wisdom of those who came before you, why not try to follow the abovementioned tips? MUIC offers not just world-class academics (using English as the medium of instruction) but also a ton of extracurricular activities to give its students a well-rounded education. Among these are a couple of dozen student clubs where you learn more and be able to express yourself.
